Project Information

Madem Lakkos hosts the oldest underground lead-zinc carbonate replacement mine in Greece known as Mavres Petres (“black rocks”). After several years of operations, it was recently set in care in maintenance due to depletion. However, based on geological inferences, there seems to be a possible expansion of the mine in deeper levels.
  • Client :Eldorado Gold
  • Location :Greece
  • Year launched :2021
  • Status :Ongoing
  • Value :3M €
  • Drilled :>13,000 meters

Project Description

A number of boreholes were made to investigate the existence of more sulfide lenses at deeper levels. Two (2) surface drilling rigs were mobilized to drill boreholes up to 900m in length, each. The campaign aims to minimize drilling footprint (borehole collars are in Stratoniki village), deploying many boreholes from a single drilling pad.

Project Challenge

It has been a strong challenging project.

  • Deep holes crosscutting 800m of overburden
  • Irregular ore lenses on the fault footwall
  • Variable rock conditions
  • Crosscutting several lithologies and scares pegmatite veins

RESULTS

Several orebody lenses were discovered so far verifying the continuation of the -almost- mined-out orebody. More boreholes are needed, to increase geological confidence, before the lenses may define a continuous body.
